Clarity can often be tidal: it comes and goes. Perhaps it’s the situation in which one finds oneself; perhaps it’s the time of night or early morning; perhaps it’s the relationship at the moment; perhaps it’s the next-to-last cocktail; or perhaps it’s a combination of any of the above. However, it always comes with a cost to the individual: often a loss that has been survived, a vulnerability that has been surmounted, a wound that has been endured and scarred over. 

As Albee noted when speaking about his mother approaching her nineties, “I was touched by the survivor, the figure clinging to the wreckage only partly of her own making, refusing to go under.” 

The pieces selected for this production address the clarity of three, strong women in two excerpted scenes and one monologue from two of America’s most profound playwrights.
